The Birth of British Airpower

Peter John Dye

This book examines the formation of the British Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force through the lens of the relationship between Chief of the Air Service Hugh Trenchard and his close friend, confidant, and fellow leader Maurice Baring. The author finds that without the critical intellectual interplay between Trenchard and Baring, aviation on the Western Front would have been far less successful, and the likelihood of an independent air service much smaller. Dye does a fabulous job of arguing that virtually every great military commander has a trusted aide as a subordinate who makes all the difference in the success or failure of their endeavors—the discussion showing common threads of this concept is particularly illuminating. Over the course of the book, he brings in the other key subordinates from Trenchard’s staff—but ultimately, Baring is the constant in terms of supporting Trenchard, and the way their relationship developed is fascinating. This work also analyzes organizational leadership, the formation of complex military units, and the role of aviation in modern warfare.

A Black Corps d'Elite

Richard Hill

For several years, the armies of Napoleon III deployed some 450 Muslim Sudanese slave soldiers in Veracruz, the port of Mexico City. As in the other case of Western hemisphere military slavery, the Sudanese were imported from Africa in the hopes that they would better survive the tropical diseases that so terribly afflicted European soldiers. The mixture of cultures embodied by this event has piqued the interest of several historians, so it is by no means unknown. Hill and Hogg provide a particularly thorough account of this exotic interlude, explaining its background, looking in detail at the battle record in Mexico, and figuring out who exactly made up the battalion.

Arts-Based Multiliteracies for Teaching and Learning

Beryl Peters

The current educational landscape demands more than traditional literacy skills to equip learners with the necessary tools to thrive in the modern world. The traditional focus on reading and writing print text may not be sufficient to comprehend the diverse forms of meaning-making necessary for effective communication and understanding in diverse communities. This poses a crucial challenge for educators who aspire to foster engaged and critically aware learners who can navigate the complexities of contemporary society. Arts-Based Multiliteracies for Teaching and Learning offers a transformative solution by advocating for a pedagogy of multiliteracies centered on arts-based approaches. By redefining literacy to encompass diverse modalities such as dance, drama, music, visual arts, and multi-media, this book challenges educators to expand their understanding of literacy beyond traditional boundaries. The book provides a compelling rationale for integrating arts-based multiliteracies across all levels and curricular areas.

Max Reinhardt

Peter W. Marx

Max Reinhardt was one of the formative directors of modern theater. Starting as an actor, it soon became clear that he wanted more. His vision of a theater "that returns joy to the people" was vast and expansive: It included intimate theatrical arrangement as well as mass production in the circus arena. Reinhardt's aesthetics were not restricted to a single program but indulged in a playful eclecticism. Thus, his career as a director that lasted for almost 40 years comprises a broad variety of artists of various genres as well as many different styles. At the same time, Reinhardt soon longed for an international range: guest performances throughout Europe and to the US soon made him into a global star – and even a brand. He represents a metropolitan culture that roots in the late nineteenth century but comes to an end when Fasicsm in Europe ended any hopes for an international culture. As a Jew, Reinhardt himself had to flee the Nazis but when he eventually arrived in the US, he could not follow up with his earlier successes. Marx provides a broad panorama of Reinhardt's work, portraying not only his work method and some of his best known productions, but also the cultural conditions of his visionary enterprise.

Juvenile Justice in African and Western Criminal Justice Systems

Simeon Peter Sungi

The field of juvenile justice faces significant challenges, particularly in comparing African and Western criminal justice systems. Many African jurisdictions still operate under colonial structures, hindering effective treatment and rehabilitation of juvenile offenders. The lack of comprehensive literature addressing global juvenile delinquency and criminal justice responses creates a knowledge gap that hampers the development of international juvenile justice practices. This impedes the ability of academics, practitioners, students, and policymakers to navigate the complexities of the field. To address these issues, Juvenile Justice in African and Western Criminal Justice Systems , edited by Simeon Sungi, George Kakoti, and Deneil D. Christian, provides an in-depth examination of comparative juvenile justice. By analyzing the social, historical, and legal contexts, the book offers valuable insights into theory and practice, paving the way for the future development of international juvenile justice systems. With comprehensive coverage of topics such as public perceptions of juvenile crime, measurement of juvenile delinquency, police responses, diversion programs, ethical considerations, and the intersection of the international criminal justice system with juvenile offenders, the book equips readers with a solid foundation to understand and navigate the operations of juvenile justice systems across the globe. Juvenile Justice in African and Western Criminal Justice Systems serves as an essential resource for academics, practitioners, students, and policymakers seeking a comprehensive understanding of juvenile delinquency and criminal justice responses from a comparative perspective. By addressing the complexities of the field and offering innovative perspectives, the book empowers readers to contribute to the future development of international juvenile justice practices. It fills a critical gap in literature, facilitating informed decision-making and driving positive change in the field of juvenile justice.
