Civil engineering includes structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering, environmental engineering, transportation engineering, and construction management which can be an industrial sector which derives great benefit from the optimization because these techniques can save a lot of costs in public infrastructure construction and management that require enormous budget. This book tries to cover a wide picture how the optimization techniques can be applied to various civil engineering problems such construction and project management, structural engineering, water and environmental engineering, and transportation engineering. At first, we discuss evaluation and optimization of the financial sustainability of public rental housing projects and service radius model and service scope optimization of city public parking garage. Then we present an experimental study of structural identification of bridges using the kinetic energy optimization technique and the direct matrix updating method and design optimization of a concrete face rock-fill dam by using genetic algorithm. Hedging rules for water supply reservoir based on the model of simulation and optimization and fuzzy decision support system to determine swell/shrink factor affecting earthwork optimization of highways are also discussed.

In the middle part of the book, we focus on life cycle assessment and optimization-based decision analysis of construction waste recycling for a university building and an optimization system for concrete life cycle cost and related CO2 emissions. Then a full factorial design based desirability function approach for optimization of properties of C 40/50 concrete class and studies on pumice lightweight aggregate concrete with quarry dust using mathematical modelling aid of optimization techniques are also discussed. We also try to present an optimization model for design of Asphalt pavements and study on the seismic active earth pressure by variational limit equilibrium method.

The last parts of the book describe applying the Taguchi method to river water pollution remediation strategy optimization and multi objective optimization of water distribution networks using fuzzy theory and harmony search. We also try to find out the optimization of upstream detention reservoir facilities for downstream flood mitigation in urban areas and daily reservoir runoff forecasting method using artificial neural network based on quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization. At the end, we describe optimization of open canal cross sections by differential evolution algorithm and surface water quality monitoring site optimization for the largest freshwater lake in China.

Tanjina Nur finished her PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2014 from University of Technology Sydney (UTS). Now she is working as Post-Doctoral Researcher in the Centre for Technology in Water and Wastewater (CTWW) and published about eight International journal papers with 80 citations. Her research interest is wastewater treatment technology using adsorption process.
