In 1972, the UN General Assembly designated June 5th as World Environment Day, and in the 45 years since, it has become the UN's most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of the environment. Celebrated in over 100 countries, and hosted by a different country every year, World Environment Day focuses on what all people can do to help the environment – whether it be globally, locally, or individually.

Each year, the Day pays specific attention to a particular theme to act as a call to action for all involved – for 2018, the theme is ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. Chosen by this year’s host country, India, the theme asks the public to consider how we might all make changes in our everyday lives to lessen the impacts of plastic pollution on the natural world. On a local level, World Environment Day and the UN Environment Programme are highlighting small changes that anyone can make in order to cut back on plastic waste – from using reusable water bottles and coffee cups to taking a more conscientious approach to picking up litter in our local environments.

In line with this year’s World Environment Day, we’ve chosen some of our publisher’s new and bestselling titles that deal with the environment. Whether examining the impacts of plastic pollution specifically or approaching sustainability, the environment, and green development more widely, these titles all provide crucial insight into the world around us – and offer strategies to help preserve it.
