United Nations Day 2018

United Nations Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the United Nations Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations (UN) officially came into being on 24th October 1945.

Providing a forum for its members to express their views in the General Assembly, Security Council and the Economic and Social Council, the organisation exists as a mechanism for governments to find areas of agreement and solve problems together.

The UN takes action on issues confronting humanity in the 21st century, such as peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, human rights, disarmament, terrorism, humanitarian and health emergencies, gender equality, governance, food production, and more.

Key books and documents published by United Nations Publications, including the UN Charter and The Essential UN, are available on the bookstore now.
