14th – 18th March 2016 is the UK Schools’ Autism Awareness Week, and the National Autistic Society have some great resources for teachers and parents here on their website. At Eurospan we are proud to distribute books on autism from Future Horizons and Sensory World by acclaimed author Temple Grandin, whose pioneering work and life provide inspiration to those on the autistic spectrum, and their parents, teachers and other professionals.

Temple Grandin is a best-selling author, autism activist, consultant and professor of animal science at Colorado State University. She is the inventor of the "hug box", a device to calm those on the autism spectrum, and was included in the 2010 TIME 100 list of the one hundred most influential people in the world in the "Heroes" category. Diagnosed with autism as a child, the challenges and successes of her life were captured on screen in an award-winning 2010 biographical film starring Claire Danes.

In one of her latest books, The Loving Push: How Parents and Professionals Can Help Spectrum Kids Become Successful Adults (Future Horizons), Dr Grandin joins psychologist and autism specialist Dr Debra Moore in spelling out what steps you can take to restore your child’s hope and motivation, and what you must avoid. Essential reading for anyone who cares about a child or teen on the autistic spectrum, this book provides a roadmap to help prepare our youth for being happy, successful adults in today’s world. Reviewed in the Mail Online earlier this month, The Loving Push is a “valuable addition to the bookshelf of an autism parent or professional”.

For an even more personal approach, The Way I See It: A Personal Look at Autism and Asperger’s, Revised & Updated Fourth Edition (Future Horizons) sees Temple get to the real issues of autism, the ones parents, teachers, and individuals on the spectrum face every day. She offers helpful dos and don’ts, practical strategies, and try-it-now tips, all based on her insider perspective and a great deal of research.

This pocket guide is a handy reference in which Temple gives an overview of what it is like to have autism and sensory difficulties, reveals how she overcame her sensory issues, gives useful tips, and then answers your questions.

Finally, and to inspire children with autism, here is a book that will help guide all children to reach their full potential. Temple Did It, and I Can Too!: Seven Simple Life Rules (Sensory World) explains the obstacles Temple faced while growing up, then provides the rules she followed to overcome them and become a leading animal scientist. This colourful book with worksheets for children to identify and reach their goals was written with the input and guidance of Dr Grandin, and includes an introduction by her.
